Girls' Day Out
Winters in Wisconsin can be hard, especially for moms with young kids. Cabin fever sets in for kids and moms alike when the driveway has 6 inches of snow on it without a plow in sight.
One place I love to visit - summer or winter or any time of year - is the library. When we move to a new town, the library is the first place I find. It's a safe landing place for me and my children. I've been to big libraries and small libraries, old ones and new ones. Going to the library has been the one constant in my life amongst all the different cities in which we've lived.
So when I asked a friend to do a shoot for me with her two daughters, naturally we chose a favorite spot: our local library. I love the backdrop of the stacks and the girls had a fun time picking out all their favorite books.

It Ain't Easy Being Tween
Being a Tween isn't always easy. It's that time when you're not a kid anymore, but not old enough to be taken seriously either. People have stopped calling you "cute" which is just fine by you... you hate being called "cute" anyway. You're growing into your own, unique self... you have your own style and your own opinions.

Take this bit of advice from someone who has lived through her tween years and survived: Love yourself. That awkwardness you feel, all the times you think no one understands you, it's only because you're doing it right.

Becoming you won't happen overnight. It comes after testing a lot of boundaries. It comes after making a lot of wrong decisions and figuring out the right ones. It comes after trying on a lot of hats and seeing which one fits.

It's easy to compare yourself to others and feel inadequate. You're surrounded by people you think are smarter, better-looking, stronger, funnier... but they aren't any of those things. They seem to have it all figured out, but they are just like you: trying to navigate through the confusing years between being told who you are, and using your own voice to tell the world who you are.

Just when you think you'll never find yourself or feel comfortable in your own skin, you see yourself...

you're going to survive this too. And trust me, you'll be amazing.

Where Did The Time Go? {Portage, Wisconsin Family Photographer}
Dear Sarah,
Granny Moe always told me, "It's too bad kids aren't like pancakes - you make all your mistakes on the first one and just toss it out and start over." That's really true. Parents make all their mistakes on the first child, and I certainly made my share of mistakes on you. I tried my best - sometimes succeeding and sometimes falling short.
When kids are little, they are easy to please. Their joy can be found in simple things, like a sparkly rock or an airplane in the sky or even a second round of "Green Eggs and Ham" even though it's past bedtime already. But when kids grow up, it isn't so easy. Simple pleasures of childhood give way to teen years of fitting in, being understood, and knowing the right answers. I wish I could give you all those things Sarah, but I can't. That's part of being - and becoming - who you are: you need to figure out those answers for yourself. Because your answers are not the same as my answers. Your answers will come from your heart.
Sarah, I don't know how most parents feel about their little kids growing into young adults. The teenage years are filled with lots of tough choices, lots of opportunities for you to take a wrong turn or fall in with the wrong crowd. That's enough to make any parent lose sleep every night. Sarah, YOU WILL MAKE MISTAKES. You will do the wrong thing. You might have to come to your dad and me, hanging your head in shame, asking us to bail you out of trouble. But I know you, Sarah. I know your heart. I know our family. I know that little girl still lives inside you, the one who wants to be happy and who loves to snuggle on the couch. It's okay to grow up and still want to be taken care of. It's normal and natural and completely okay. We will always be here for you, no matter what. In the next few years, we might be a little TOO MUCH here for you, and you'll want your space and your privacy and to just be left alone. That's normal and natural and completely okay too. We'll still be here for you no matter what.
I don't remember when you stopped being my little girl, but it happened. You're now taller than me, and amazingly beautiful - on the outside but even more so in your heart. I'm not worried about who you are going to turn out to be because I've already seen who you are, and you're no first pancake. You're a keeper.
Every month on the 10th, I participate in a blog circle of women from Clickin Moms, to write letters to our daughters. My previous installments can be found by clicking the tab at the top of the page "Letters".
And now, please visit Danika's blog to read her letter to her daughter.

A Trip To The Store {Portage, WI Lifestyle Photographer }
"Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things."
~Robert Brault
Taking little kids to the grocery store isn't so easy. Trying to navigate the aisles of a store with tiny arms reaching out from the cart, or tiny legs running off in the opposite directon, can turn a quick errand into a 2-hour headache.
I guess this would be the part where I give you some tips from my years of experience of taking kids to the store. I could tell you how to make the trips easier on yourself or how to plan the errands at a time when you can easily get a sitter.
But instead, I'm going to share some pictures of our recent grocery trip, when I let the girls bring along their toy shopping cart to "help me". We got lots of smiles from store employees and fellow shoppers; we also got a few stink-eyes from people who were almost run over by my little energetic cart-pushers.

Taking a toy grocery cart to the store is not one of the ways I'd suggest to make your trip easier. However, it was absolutely memorable - for me and I hope for them too. Giving my girls the chance to play store - FOR REAL - was worth every stink-eye and exasperated "harumph."
These images were shot on Fuji Pro400H film with a Canon EOS5 35mm camera. I'm taking part in a blog circle through Light Inspired, and I'd love it if you could click through to Jill's Blog to see her film blog post this month!
